TV sizes: real dimensions in cm
A TV's size is its diagonal — the actual width and height are smaller than you'd think. A 55-inch TV is about 122 cm wide, not 140. Full chart and viewing-distance guide below.
TV size to real dimensions (16:9)
| TV size | Screen (W × H) | Inches | Diagonal in cm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32" | 70.8 × 39.8 cm | 27.9 × 15.7 in | 81 cm |
| 40" | 88.6 × 49.8 cm | 34.9 × 19.6 in | 102 cm |
| 43" | 95.2 × 53.5 cm | 37.5 × 21.1 in | 109 cm |
| 50" | 110.7 × 62.3 cm | 43.6 × 24.5 in | 127 cm |
| 55" | 121.8 × 68.5 cm | 47.9 × 27.0 in | 140 cm |
| 65" | 143.9 × 80.9 cm | 56.7 × 31.9 in | 165 cm |
| 75" | 166.0 × 93.4 cm | 65.4 × 36.8 in | 190 cm |
| 85" | 188.2 × 105.8 cm | 74.1 × 41.7 in | 216 cm |
These are the exact 16:9 screen dimensions. The full set is a bit bigger: bezels add roughly 1–3 cm per side and the stand adds height. For furniture or wall-mount planning, check the model's spec sheet.
How far should you sit?
A common guideline for 4K TVs: sit about 1 to 1.5× the diagonal away. For a 55″ (140 cm diagonal) that's roughly 1.4–2.1 m; for a 65″ about 1.7–2.5 m. Sitting further is fine — you just stop seeing the extra 4K detail.
| TV size | Suggested distance (4K) |
|---|---|
| 43" | 1.1 – 1.6 m |
| 50" | 1.3 – 1.9 m |
| 55" | 1.4 – 2.1 m |
| 65" | 1.7 – 2.5 m |
| 75" | 1.9 – 2.9 m |
